AGARTALA, Sept 1 - Nine more COVID-19 patients died and 509 new positive cases were detected in Tripura during the past 24 hours.
The COVID-19 death toll in the State has surged to 112, the second highest in the North East after Assam. Till date, Tripura has witnessed 11,627 positive cases, while the number of active cases stands at 3,858.
Alarmed at the steep spike in the positive cases, the West Tripura district administration has called for mass COVID-19 tests in the ten wards under the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) to check further transmission of the infection. According to sources, 70 per cent of the COVID-19 patients in the city are residents of the ten wards. In some wards, the number of positive cases has crossed the 100 mark.
�We have decided to carry out antigen tests en masse in the 10 wards of the AMC. This will be done within two weeks,� said a senior government official here today.
Meanwhile, the West Tripura district administration has decided to impose night curfew in the AMC areas from 8 pm to 5 am from today, which will continue till September 30.
In an official order, the District Magistrate of Tripura West, Dr Sailesh Kumar Yadav, said there would be prohibition on the gathering of more than 10 persons during the period. Political, social, entertainment, cultural and religious programmes are also prohibited. All schools, colleges and educational institutions will remain closed.
However, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and other hospitality services will be allowed to operate provided they obey the SOP. Shops will be allowed to function, but they need to strictly maintain social distancing norms.
Sources said the steps have been taken by the district administration in view of the steep increase in positive cases and casualties within the AMC areas.
Among the 509 positive cases detected in the State on Monday, the Tripura West district reported 258 cases, a medical bulletin issued by the State Health and Family Welfare department stated today.
Due to the sudden rise in the COVID-19 cases, Tripura�s positivity rate has surged to 4.28 per cent, while the recovery rate has climbed down to 65.83 per cent and the facility rate stands at 0.96 per cent.
