Tripura Congmen attacked during relief distribution

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, May 3 - Three Congress workers, including president of Majlishpur Block Congress Arun Saha, sustained injuries when they were allegedly attacked by a group of BJP-backed miscreants during a relief distribution programme at Ranir Bazar in West Tripura district this morning.

Relief materials brought by the Congress workers were allegedly snatched away by the miscreants.

PCC general secretary Tajen Das somehow escaped unhurt in the attack.

PCC president Pijush Kanti Biswas rushed to the spot and expressed serious concern over the attack during the relief distribution programme meant to provide succour to the poor during the lockdown. An FIR has been lodged with the Ranir Bazar Police Station against the attackers but no arrest has been made yet.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhavan here, the PCC president alleged that party leaders and workers were attacked and threatened by the BJP workers at various places for helping the poor.

Todays incident at Ranir Bazar is the latest when our party leaders and workers who went there to help the poor during the lockdown came under attack. Dont know what kind of message they want to send by attacking Opposition party workers, he said.

Referring to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Debs tough words against errant party supporters at the all-party meeting, Biswas said it would deem to be double standard if strong action is not taken against those involved in the Ranir Bazar incident.

We want a clarification from the Chief Minister on relief distribution for the poor. Following the Chief Ministers appeal, we decided to lend a helping hand to the people in distress in these difficult times. If they think only the ruling party is authorised to distribute relief among the poor then let them do it. Truly speaking, the rural poor are really struggling because of the lockdown that commenced on March 25, he said.

Earlier, Congress leaders and workers had faced threats and intimidations at Belonia, Khowai and Teliamura from the BJP supporters but nobody has been arrested yet.
