Tripura Cong chief clears stand on NRC

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, March 2 - Newly-appointed Tripura Congress president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman today made it clear that everything should not be mixed up with policies for personal gain.

I am from a family that had contributed a lot to the State of Tripura and I am totally against vote bank politics, he said to a query on his stand on the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

I dont support any move to identify people and drive them out of the country. I had submitted the court plea on a personal level, not as a political leader, Debbarman, who filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking the NRC in Tripura, told reporters at the Congress Bhavan here.

On his much publicised slogan, Poila jati ulo party (nationality first, then politics), the PCC president said, In some cases, nationality or the communitys identity should get priority over politics.

Debbarman also questioned a magisterial inquiry report on the Madhabbari incident in which six persons were injured in clashes between bandh supporters and security personnel on January 8. The bandh was called in support of the NESO strike against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Debbarman, who arrived here after being appointed as the Tripura Congress president, said a committee would soon be constituted to finalise the partys strategy for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
