Tripura CM urges Centre to complete bridge over Feni

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, July 10 - Underlining the need for speedy completion of the Feni bridge in Sabroom subdivision of south Tripura, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said the entire North East will get direct access to the Chittagong port in Bangladesh if the project is put into place.

As per the deadline, the bridge construction work is supposed to be completed by next year. Currently, there is no connectivity between Bangladesh and Tripura through Sabroom, the southernmost border of the State. If the bridge is constructed over the Feni river connecting Sabroom and Ramgarh (in Bangladesh), direct connectivity will become a reality.

At the NEC plenary held in Shillong on Monday, the Chief Minister batted for speedy completion of the bridge. If the bridge is completed, Sabroom will become a gateway to the entire North East and this will reduce prices of commodities by 25 per cent in the North Eastern region, he pointed out. The NEC plenary, which was chaired by the Union Home Minister, was attended by Governors, Chief Ministers and senior officials of the DoNER.

Debs statement assumes significance in view of the new Governments thrust to increase bilateral trade with Bangladesh. All the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States have supported enhancement of border trade with the neighbouring country.

On his part, the Tripura Chief Minister also spoke on Prime Minister Narendra Modis vision of doubling farmers income by 2022. The NEC can play an important role by becoming a hub for marketing of agricultural produce. Tripura announced a horticulture vision in the State Budget and has also made efforts to promote queen pineapple, which has been declared as the State fruit by President Ram Nath Kovind, he said.
