AGARTALA, May 27 (Agencies) - The Tripura census authority has warned of action against the enumerators, in case anybody is found negligent in performing their assigned work, following some complaints from the civil society.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Director, Census Operation (Tripura) Dilip Acharjee said about 75 per cent of housing census and National Population Register (NPR) canvassing work was completed in Tripura and rest of the work would be completed by June 9 next.

''Despite rigorous monitoring on our part, a few complaints we received against the enumerators regarding their casual attitude and insincerity in such a noble task and they will be recommended for stringent action to the State government,'' Acharjee said.

He said about 16,000 experienced enumerators were selected mostly from the teachers' community to get an authentic outcome for two-phases inventory work - housing census and National Population Register (NPR) - in canvasser method in the State.

''The Government of India has decided to create a National Population Register (NPR), first time in time detailing all personal information of the individuals along with the residence lists, which will be maintained by unique identification number as ready reference for any use,'' Acharjee said.

He, however, pointed out since the process and index of data collection would follow certain new things in an enhanced format, the authority had already started selection of the enumerators considering the experience and all other relevant details for successful completion of the census.

''The mammoth task of Census is being taken through missionary zeal and dedication, we prefer school teachers for both enumeration and supervising work of the census because sincere collection of data and motivating the people is the biggest task, which will ultimately reflect the spirit of unity and diversity,'' Acharjee attributed.
