AGARTALA, Sept 26 - Setting aside all speculations, the Council of Ministers has decided to appoint a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the brutal murder of a TV journalist- Santanu Bhowmik.

Santanu, a journalist of a local cable TV channel Din Raat, was murdered by suspected IPFT supporters at Mandai on September 20. The composition of the SIT is still unknown but highly placed sources in the administration said that DIG (northern range) Arindam Nath was likely to be nominated as head of the SIT.

The Council of Ministers on Tuesday ordered SIT probe into the murder of Santanu Bhowmik who was killed on September 20, ICA Minister Bhanu Lal Saha said after the Cabinet meeting.

Besides, the State Government also decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the victims family as compensation because his mother is not in a position to bear the expenses of his younger sisters higher education outside the State.

When his attention was drawn to the demand for CBI probe or judicial probe by a sitting HC judge raised by journalists, Saha said the Government ordered SIT probe after reviewing the progress of the case.

The Cabinet was happy over the progress in investigation of the murder case, he said.Saha requested the people to keep faith in the State police ability in handling such cases.

Despite CBI probe, the High Court of Tripura had ordered SIT investigation into the chit fund cases. I hope the State police will be able to provide justice to the victims family, he added.
