Tripura BJP gears up for panchayat polls

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, June 13 - The ruling BJP will announce names of candidates for the ensuing three-tier panchayat elections in the State within this month itself, party sources stated. All leaders of district and mandal units of the party have been asked to send names of candidates from their respective areas, to the State-level committee headed by Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath by June 22.

After getting the lists, the 13-member State committee will announce the party nominees in consultation with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is also the State BJP president.

Meanwhile, the State-level committee held a meeting with chiefs of the district and mandal units of the party as well as heads of other frontal organisations at the party headquarters here today. Chief Minister Deb presided over the meeting. Two party general secretaries Pratima Bhowmik and Rajib Bhattacharjee were also present in the meeting.

The BJP will field 50 per cent female candidates in the rural polls, as part of its mission to allow women lead from the front with regard to village development issues.

The Chief Minister appealed to the party workers to put in all efforts to win the panchayat elections. We must work with full devotion like the way we did in the 2018 Assembly elections and the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, Deb exhorted the party workers.

When contacted, State BJP general secretary Rajib Bhattacharjee said the party would announce the candidates for the panchayat polls after the State Election Commission notified the poll schedule.
