MANGALDAI, Sept 4 The Darrang police this afternoon arrested ULFA (pro-talk) leader Ranju Saharia alias Pranjit Saikia and sent him to judicial custody in connection with the sensational triple suicide case that took place at Tezpur on the night of September 2.

In the tragic incident, three members of a family, including Bhabani Sarma (57), his son Manjul Sarma (33) and daughter-in-law Astomi Sarma (25), committed suicide by jumping into the Brahmaputra.

Fortunately, Makan Devi, wife of Bhabani Sarma, who too tried to jump into the river, could be rescued.

The bodies of Manjul and his wife remain untraced.

Makan Devi late last evening filed an FIR at the Mangaldai police station accusing Ranju Saharia and 11 others of compelling the family to take the extreme step. On the basis of the FIR, the police registered a case and arrested Saharia from his residence at Sipajhar.

The other persons accused in the case are Madhab Bhuyan of Milanpur, Mukut Ali of Nagarbahi, Shyamanta Kalita of Kalitapara, Nurul Haque, Mahammed Babu, Ramu and Safiqul Islam of Nagarbahi, Ziarul Rahman of Kharupetia, Tapsil Akram Siddiqui of Kalaigaon, and Ranjan Dhar.

In the FIR, Makan Devi directly accused that all the accused persons were inflicting physical and mental torture on the family to repay the loan amounting to Rs 15 lakh, which accrued to an amount of Rs 2, 94,60,000 at 30 percent interest per month. She accused Saharia of threatening to gun them down for their failure to repay the amount.

Significantly, in the FIR Makan Devi also stated that they have repaid the initial amount of Rs 15 lakh to the money lenders, yet the group kept on demanding the total amount with interest.

The police, meanwhile, are making all efforts to arrest the other accused persons.
