Tricolour hoisted on first I-Day to be unfurled again

By Irfan Khondker

DHUBRI, Aug 14 - A Tricolour that was hoisted with pride and enthusiasm on Indias first Independence Day on August 15, 1947, is being hoisted every Republic Day and Independence Day at a house in Ward No.1 of Gauripur town.

Siblings Kanakendu Narayan Mondal and Basantika Mondal have been hoisting the same National Flag at their residence at Gauripur. This flag was hoisted by their father Shibendra Narayan Mondal on the day of Indian Independence.

Both the siblings now retired teachers said with pride that their father was the then Circle Officer under Gauripur Raja Estate and was posted at Agomoni.

He brought this khadi flag and hoisted it at his quarter at Agomoni on that auspicious day. Later, it was brought to our residence at Gauripur and since then, we have kept it with us and have been hoisting it every Republic Day and Independence Day, said Kanakendu Narayan Mondal.

They have kept the flag in a very delicate manner with utmost care, so that no wear and tear can be seen and the colours on the flag are almost intact.

We feel very proud hoisting this flag. We have a special connection with this flag, said Kanakendu. Memories of our father are attached with it. When this flag flies high, we feel the joy that our father had felt.
