GUWAHATI, July 15 - Singhapurush Radha Govinda Baruah was fondly remembered across the State today on the occasion of his 41st death anniversary. Floral tributes were paid to the architect of modern Assam remembering his contributions in the fields of culture, sports and journalism.

Founder of The Assam Tribune Group of Publications, Radha Govinda Baruah, popularly known as RG, was instrumental in building state-of-the-art sports infrastructure in Guwahati, besides bringing Bihu onto stage from the fields and initiating a number of other cultural and sports activities in the State. This apart, he also played a pioneering role in almost every sphere of public life.

Other than being the first Mayor of Guwahati and launching the leading English daily of the region, The Assam Tribune, RG Baruah is also remembered for his groundbreaking efforts to start the Assam Flying Club, Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and the Nehru Stadium.

The RG Baruah Smriti Rakhya Committee, Guwahati organized a tribute programme at Digalipukhuripar near the bronze statue of the iconic personality this morning. RG Baruahs son and editor of The Assam Tribune, Prafulla Govinda Baruah initiated the tribute proceedings, followed by directors of the Assam Tribune Group Babita Rajkhowa and Surajit Govinda Baruah and a number of other eminent persons.

Speaking on the occasion, Munin Bayan, executive editor of the Dainik Asam, said that in his pursuit to contribute for society, RG became an institution himself. Not just a visionary, he was industrious enough to transform his visions into reality with planning and precision. Rare are such examples of true grit and determination in our society, he added.

Journalist and sports organizer Hiranya Barman added that RG Baruahs entire life offers enough scope of study. One can learn how he planned innovative things and executed them perfectly, he said, adding that the Assam Tribune Sports Club would shortly launch a competition for children and teenagers in the name of RG Baruah.

Sports organizer Tridiv Duvarah said players and sports enthusiasts of Assam would always remain indebted to RG Baruah for creating opportunities for the younger generations. Coming from Dibrugarh, he contributed immensely to Guwahati and the entire State. Along with a number of eminent persons of his times and aided by sons the late TG Baruah, and PG Baruah, he put meticulous efforts to build the Nehru Stadium that has given us a number of eminent sports figures of Assam, he added.

Sports organizer Anjan Hazarika also spoke about the innovative steps taken by RG Baruah that later became major institutions in the State. General secretary of the Smriti Rakhya Committee, Bhuban Lahkar conducted the programme where social activists Dhiren Baruah, Satyen Doloi and Arati Kalita.
