Tributes paid to trade union leader

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 27 - Tea workers of Doomdooma area paid rich tributes to Girish Chandra Borpatra Gohain, veteran trade union leader and general secretary of the central committee and Doomdooma Circle of Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS), who died on Monday. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the ACKS flag is being kept at half mast for a week in the ACKS circle office here since Tuesday.

On Tuesday, representatives of all the garden units of ACKS of Doomdooma circle gathered at its circle office here and paid tributes to the leader who led the circle as general secretary for the last 32 years and the central committee of ACKS as general secretary for the last 20 years.

ACKS Doomdooma circle president Bimal Baruah lit a lamp and offered floral tributes at the portrait of Borpatra Gohain. Addressing a memorial meeting, ACKS treasurer and a close associate of Borpatra Gohain, Biren Adhyapak, Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha president Arjun Baruah, tea garden employee and writer Supriti Baruah and others recalled the bold leadership and contributions of Borpatra Gohain for the welfare of the tea employees. In his address, Bimal Baruah said tea garden employees �have lost their guardian� at the death of Borpatra Gohain. The meeting observed one-minute silence for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.

AJYCP committees formed: To strengthen the organisational base of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), five branch committees under its Doomdooma regional committee were formed in two meetings held at Doomdooma and Rupai Siding recently. In the meeting at Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha Bhawan at Hansara, No.8 Sookreting, Gopinath Bordoloi and Doomdooma College branch committees were formed.

In the meeting at Rupai Siding, Bijoy Nagar, the Bijoy Nagar branch committee was formed. Both the meetings were chaired by Doomdooma regional committee president Prabhakar Sharma and were attended by Tinsukia district committee president Surajit Moran, vice president Sonmoni Chaliha, joint secretary Tomal Gupta, Doomdooma regional committee secretary Bijit Handique and others.
