Tributes paid to the Mahatma across State

MANGALDAI, Oct 3 - Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated here yesterday along with the rest of the State. Freedom fighters, senior officials of Darrang administration including Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his symbolic memorial graveyard in Gandhi Smriti Udyan. An all-religion prayer, presentation of Ramdhun Bhajan and different competitions on the life and philosophy of Gandhiji among the students marked the celebrations.

Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated by Darrang district committe of State Freedom Fighers� Association here at the District Library auditorium with a daylong programme. Several freedom fighers were felicitated by the public. Gurujyoti Das, MLA, Mangaldai and many prominent persons attended the function.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhijan (RMSA), Darrang also celebrated Gandhi Jayanti here at the Mangaldai Vidyapeeth School campus with a variety of programmes including competitions on science models, exhibition on the focal theme of Swacch Bharat, quiz and debate competitions, excursions for students to places of historical importance and public function, among others. This three-daylong programme was inaugurated by Naranarayan Nath, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education), Darrang by lighting the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. The inaugural function chaired by Sadulla Khan, Inspector of Schools, Darrang cum District Programme Coordinator (DPC), RMSA, Darrang was also addressed by Dr Nagendra Nath Sharma, eminent academician and retired head of the department of Political Science, Mangaldai College as the appointed speaker.

BARPETA: The birth anniversary of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated across the Barpeta district with various programmes. Statues of Gandhiji located at Zila Parishad office and Tarun Phookan Memorial auditorium were garlanded by additional deputy commissioners Tankeswar Das and Hemanta Bhuyan respectively. A cleanliness drive was undertaken by the district administration and the Barpeta Municipal Board in which a large number of people participated.

In another function, the Sarthebari Town Committee felicitated a number of persons in a function held at their office campus. The meeting was chaired by Bijay Bhuyan, chairman of the town committee. A portrait of the first chairman of the town committee late Dharmeswar Deka was unveiled in the office.

Bapujee College, Sarukshetri celebrated the day by erecting a bronze bust of the great soul in the office campus. People in large numbers, including teachers and students, participated in the function held on the ocassion.

All the schools conducted several events to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. Some clubs and NGOs also organised attractive events to mark the ocassion.

NAGAON: To mark the Gandhi Jayanti, number of functions were organised here. Synchronising with the day, the Rotary Club of Nagaon arranged a marathon to create awareness among the people on Swacch Bharat Abhijan.

The marathon was formally flagged off by Nagaon MLA Rupok Sarmah. About 1000 participants, both boys and girls, took part in the race. The organisers also offered awards for the first three position holders of both boys and girls.

Sadou Asam Gramya Puthibharal Santha also celebrated the day at their office premises by paying tributes to the father of the nation. Social worker Bijoy Manglunia, Gupeswar Bora and secretary of the Santha, Balladev Sarma were present, among others

Members of Leo Club of Nagaon also celebrated the day with Gramya Puthibharal Santha. Volunteers of Nehru Yubak Kendra also took up a cleanliness drive near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and offered floral tributes at his statue.

Mushalpur (ANN Service): Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with a daylong programme in the Government offices and academic institutions in Baksa on Sunday. The district-level programme of RMSA�Baksa was centrally organised at Mushalpur Higher Secondary School with garlanding of Gandhiji�s portrait, lighting of wicks, quiz competitions, extempore speech competitions and dancing competitions among students. Zenith Club of Thamna, Gyanpeeth Mahavidyalaya (Jr) of Nikashi, Modern English School of Nikashi organised programmes which was also marked by cleanliness drive as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
