NALBARI, Sept 20 - Rich tributes were paid in memory of Swahid Mukunda Kakati,a martyr of the Quit India Movement of 1942, at a brief function held at the premises of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital here today. The programme was jointly organised by the Swahid Mukunda Kakati Smriti Nyas Samiti and the Blood Bank of the civil hospital.
The day-long programme began with hoisting of the flag by Dr Ramesh Bhattacharya, Superintendent of the hospital. It was followed by garlanding on the statue of the martyr by Dr Bhupesh Sarma. Noted social worker Laxmi Rani Das lit the ceremonial earthen lamp before the statue. The tribute-paying meeting was conducted by Dr Kameswar Lahkar, secretary of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Smriti Nyas and was addressed by Purabi Konwar, Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari district, Dhrubajyoti Sarma, president of Nalbari district Sahitya Sabha, Phanidhar Deka, former Principal of Barbhag College, senior journalist Ramen Kalita and Dr Bipin Chandra Kalita.
The speakers recalled the supreme sacrifice of Swahid Mukunda Kakati and urged upon the Government to observe his death anniversary officially at his birth place.
Dr Nalini Barman, officiating Joint Director of Health Services subsequently offered the vote of thanks to the participants while Deputy Commissioner Purabi Konwar too paid glowing tributes to the martyr of 1942.
