Tribunal releases woman declared as foreigner

By CORRESPONDENT

BONGAIGAON, July 5 - The Foreigners Tribunal in Chirang district ordered the release of a declared woman foreigner Anna Bala Ray, 40, on bail on Wednesday after accepting documents submitted by her husband Wednesday afternoon.

The tribunal had declared Anna, a resident of Pub Ankorbari in Chirang district, a foreigner on January 2 this year after she failed to appear before the tribunal with her documents in support of her citizenship on five consecutive dates, said her legal counsel Daniel Das.

On June 23, police had arrested Anna from her residence and put her in the detention centre in the Kokrajhar district jail campus.

Annas husband Panchanan Ray, 57, a wage earner, on Wednesday, submitted a few documents relating to the citizenship of his wife Anna to the tribunal through his counsel Robin Gogoi in the afternoon. Later, the member of the tribunal issued the release order after revoking the order which declared Anna a foreigner.

The tribunal also directed Anna to appear before it on July 6 with all the documents which support her Indian citizenship.

Meanwhile, the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union and its associated groups staged a three-hour protest demonstration at Chirang district headquarters Kajalgaon on Wednesday to mount pressure on the tribunal and the administration for Annas release.
