IMPHAL, May 3 - Academic activities in Manipur University (MU) was paralysed today as the Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU), backed by the influential All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM), launched a two-day agitation demanding cancellation of the university authorities decision to slice reservation given to tribal students.
Earlier, the union held protest dharna at the university campus to press for the same.
Sources in the ATSUM informed Newmai News Network that the agitation will be extended if the authorities concerned and the State government fail to fulfill the key demands by tomorrow. They threatened to start a series of agitations, like economic blockade and bandhs along National Highways beginning May 5 if the government fails to act on the demand.
A leader of the union said the recent resolution adopted by the Deans Committee of the university to reduce the quota from 31 percent to 7.5 percent is unacceptable and it should be revoked as it is widely felt that the decision violates rights of the tribal people.
