UDALGURI, Sept 7 - The Gorkha Development Council (GDC) of Assam has condemned the attitude of the Tribal Sangha towards the Gorkha community, a press release of the organisation stated this today.

The GDC press release issued by Ganga Poudyal, vice chairman of the organisation alleged that Milan Sonowal and Aditya Khaklary, president and secretary respectively of the Sangha recently in a press meet protested against according autonomous councils to six ethnic groups of the State and a few other organisations democratic demands and questioned the validity of the Gorkha community people of the State along with such other linguistic ethnic groups.

Poudyal in the press release said that the demand for the autonomous council was not a new demand but it was a result of series of agitations for ages which the State government has understood well now and thus is going to honour the sentiments of this loyal and patriotic community along with others. It is our constitutional and legal right to have a council which the Sangha should not protest but rather welcome, the press release added. The GDC vice chairman further said that the Gorkhas living in the State for centuries are peace-loving, brave and patriotic and they have been supporting the issues and problems of the various indigenous communities of the region. He also demanded apology from the Tribal Sangha in this regard.
