Tribal Sangha blames govt for border row

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 18 The wrong policy of the Assam Government towards the settlers of the inter-state border areas has made the situation along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh and Assam-Nagaland borders tense these days, alleged All Assam Tribal Sangha.

The Sangha in a statement here today, expressed serious concern over the incidents of attack on the Assam people by the Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh authorities. These incidents are the results of the failure of the Assam Government to resolve the border disputes with the neighbouring states with urgent measures, said the Sangha.

Moreover, it is often alleged that the police administration and the CRPF have been traumatizing the people living in the Assam side of the border, instead of protecting them from the miscreants belonging to the other states, said the Sangha.

The Assam Government has been deliberately depriving the indigenous people living in the border areas from land settlement rights for ages. These people should be granted settlement rights. For they are the victims of flood and erosion, the Sangha said.

If they are granted the settlement rights, they will become permanent settlers of the inter-state border areas and this will transform them into the ever vigilant border guards.

However, it is the duty of the Assam Government to initiate pro-active measures for resolving the inter-state disputes with the neighbouring states and also to suppress the miscreants belonging to these states. With measures to accomplish these objectives the Assam Government can protect the life and property of the indigenous people living in these areas, said the Sangha.
