IMPHAL, Aug 11 A National Award-winning Manipur film based on the popular Tangkhul folk singer Rewben Mashangva of Ukhrul district has been selected to be screened in the competition category of the 18th edition of the Lessinia Film Festival in Italy this month.

The musical film Songs of Mashangva which was produced and directed by young filmmaker Oinam Doren will be shown in Bosco Chiesanuova, Italy, from August 18-26, 2012, according to sources available here.

According to a message from the festival director, the Lessinia Film Festival selection committee met to consider works from 44 countries in order to deliberate their admission into the 18th Annual Film Festival.

The idea for the musical film was conceived way back in college when the National Award-winning filmmaker Oinam Doren was doing his graduation and heard Rewben Mashangvas music for the first time, a press statement issued by Ourvilage Films said.

The melodious tunes which Mashangva described as Naga folk blues rooted to the Tangkhul folk music was something the young music lover/collector Doren never heard before. Eight years later, the father of Naga folk blues and the filmmaker met by accident in Shallow Rivers Studio, Imphal, that led them to collaborate on three musical films. Songs of Mashangva is the first of the trilogy.

Songs of Mashangva has already won the 58th National Award and has been screened in a number of prestigious film festivals around the world, including Indian Panorama 2011.
