Trial run of ambitious water supply project begins

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 23 - The trial run of the much-anticipated water supply project in Guwahati has begun in a couple of localities.

An official in the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board said around 150 connections have been given in the Pandu area and some 70 in the Happy Valley area of Uzanbazar.

Test run is being conducted in these areas for the last few weeks. We will gradually go on adding the connections in a phased manner. Monthly targets are being set, he said.

The official said around 70 per cent pipe laying works have been completed. All major lines and raw water lines have been laid. There are some gaps, particularly in difficult terrain area. But we hope to complete it in one years time, he said.

The three separate water supply projects which are under implementation aim to provide a reliable, safe and 24x7 high pressure piped supply of safe drinking water to every household within the metropolitan area.

Water will be stored in 23 service reservoirs and distributed through a network of about 2,000 km long pipes, providing more than 2 lakh house connections.

The three projects together aim to cover the entire estimated population with the supply of 135 litres per capita per day (LPCD) of water in the year 2025 and the facilities are being designed with an expected capacity upgrade in the later years to meet the water demand of the estimated population in the year 2040.
