Trekkers posing threat to commuters lives

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 12 Trekkers, which have now become an essential mode of public transport for the city dwellers, is posing threat to the lives of hundreds dependent on it for their day-to-day activities.

Commuters have alleged that most of these trekker drivers are under-aged and do not even have driving licences. Rash driving, carrying passengers double its capacity has become a common sight and now the situation is getting worse with under-aged drivers being roped in by the trekker owners.

To the utter despair of the commuters, even the law enforcing agencies are tight-lipped about it.

We completely rely on these trekkers for our day-to-day activities and these trekker drivers fully aware of the fact take advantage of it. If anyone complains either about rash driving or overloading, he or she is asked to move out of the vehicle, said Rashmi Deka, a student of Gauhati University, who travels from Basistha Chariali to Jalukbari almost every day by trekker.

A senior Assam Police official, when asked, informed that they are equally concerned about the problem and assured that very soon steps would be taken in this regard.

Sources, meanwhile, has informed that hundreds of driving licences seized from the trekker drivers were sent to the respective DTOs for verification in a phased manner.

Of those, around 20 licences appeared to be fake ones. We have intimated the authority concern for necessary action, sources added.
