Treatment of COVID-19 to be free in State

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 1 - Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today told the Assembly that Assam COVID care mechanism was one of the most successful models of COVID-19 management in the country with lowest mortality and second highest testing.

Replying to the Oppositions allegation regarding the governments move to monetise COVID care in Assam, the minister said that COVID treatment in the State is free and it will remain free.

Only some of the facilities have been made chargeable for obvious reasons. Those availing the paying cabin facility, or requiring a COVID-19 test report within 24 hours will have to pay for it. Similarly, the nursing home patients will have to pay the plasma kit charges, the minister said urging the House that the COVID-care matter should not be politicised.

Earlier, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha alleged that whereas the government was spending on direct benefit transfer scheme like Arunodoi, the life saving service like COVID management was being monetised, undermining the value of human lives.
