GUWAHATI, Sept 21 The 36-hour transport strike called from 6 am today was deferred by the All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) after its central council meeting held at 11 am today.
The meeting discussed the written assurance given by the State Transport Minister Chandan Brahma to raise the issue of hike in the fares of commercial vehicles in the Cabinet meeting, scheduled on September 22, secretary general of the Association Pradeep Das said.
Accordingly, we decided to defer the strike after 2 pm today and issued instructions to all our members throughout the State. Public transport returned to normalcy in the second half of the day. Another meeting of the AAMTA central council would be held after 15 days to review the situation, Das added.
Confusion, however, prevailed among the common people regarding the strike. Many commuters, who depend on public transport, preferred not to step out. Due to the absence of school buses in the morning hours, most of the private schools declared holiday. Many of the government schools also could not continue the classes due to very little attendance. In Guwahati too, fewer city buses plied on the roads. Most of our students could not attend the school due to the transport strike today morning. Though a few of them managed to come, the attendance was very thin to continue the classes and we had to send them back, Jyotsna Devi Principal of the TC Girls Higher Secondary School said.
