Transport department to launch drive from today

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 18 The Transport department will launch an intensified drive in Guwahati from tomorrow against vehicles flouting provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Separate teams of the Transport department (Kamrup Metro) will be on the job in different points.

The District Transport Officer (Registration and Licencing) Gautam Das informed that the drive is aimed at enforcement of provisions of the MV Act, which so often are violated on the roads of Guwahati.

From time to time, we have been carrying out such drives. But there is a lot to be done to bring about a change in the outlook of the drivers and the transporters as far as adhering to the legal provisions of the Act is concerned, a senior transport department official said.

He said that the department would be severe on second time violators and action would be taken as per the law.

Besides, we are also contemplating suspension and cancellation of licence of drivers depending on the gravity of their offence, he said.

It needs mention that the Transport Commissioner has recently written to all the DTOs of the State asking them to mobilize their resources to collect fines from the violators to meet the demand.

However, Guwahati (Metro) is among the few districts which already meet the target.
