Transgender body to move HC over memo on welfare board

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 6 - The All Assam Transgender Association (AATA) will soon move the Gauhati High Court by challenging the memorandum of association formulated by the State government regarding the State Transgender Welfare Board.

Recently, the Social Welfare department constituted the State Transgender Welfare Board as per the State policy on transgender approved by the State Cabinet.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, transgender activist Swati Bidhan Barua, who is preparing to challenge the memorandum of association on behalf of AATA, said implementation of the same will turn the State Transgender Welfare Board into a toothless tiger and it will have no power to take any step for welfare of the transgender community.

Barua said AATA will also move the government to transfer officials of the social welfare department who harbour biases against transgenders.

Assams State policy on transgender is very progressive and it was appreciated by activists from across the country. But, implementation of the present memorandum of association will not fulfil the main aim of the policy. We want a powerful State Transgender Welfare Board, so that in case of emergency it could take all kind of necessary steps, Barua said.
