Train engine derails at Silchar

SILCHAR, April 4 - A train engine got derailed at the Silchar railway station this afternoon after it hit the dead end while shunting.

The incident happened around 2 pm near the Katagang railway bridge number 37 when the engine bearing number 20071 WDP4 hit the dead end while shunting on track 12. This collision has damaged the oil tanker of the engine. The front wheel of the engine has been badly affected as the rear end of the engine was left tilted.

Rabindra Chandra Das, driver of the engine claimed that the accident was due to a failure in the engine brakes. �I have been driving since last 40 years. The engine brakes has had problems for the past few days,� he said.

It may be mentioned that the engine of the 55686 train came from Mahishashan to Silchar and was scheduled to leave for Mahishashan at 3:30 pm.

Meanwhile, Biplab Das, the Silchar railway station superintendent has said that the incident shall be probed.
