Train derailment toll mounts to 104

JHARGRAM/KOLKATA, May 29 (PTI) The death toll in the Gyaneshwari Express derailment in West Midnapore district today rose to 104 after more bodies were extricated from the wrecked coaches of the Mumbai-bound train.

"Till this morning, 104 bodies have been recovered from the accident site near Sardiha, near Jhargram," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha told PTI here.

South Eastern Railway officials put the number of injured at 250. Five of the critically injured passengers were taken to Kolkata.

To a question, the IGP said that CID investigation into the derailment of the Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express was continuing.

"Investigations are progressing, but it cannot be shared with the media," he said.

The IGP said the Maoists link in the derailment was clear, but declined to say if more evidence pointing to it has been found.
