Trafficking gang busted in North Garo Hills

By Correspondent

TURA, April 28 - In a major breakthrough, the North Garo Hills Police today busted a gang of human traffickers and arrested two members of the gang.

The two persons were arrested this afternoon. One Icilina B Sangma (of Insambal in East Garo Hills) was first nabbed by members of some NGOs. She revealed the name of another trafficker, one Khagrak Marak alias Rajen of Goalpara (Assam), for whom a trap was laid by the police.

Ichilina had lured a 12-year-old girl staying at a rented accommodation in Kharkutta and taken her away, said activist Jaynie N Sangma. On finding the minor girl missing, the landlady raised an alarm and Ichilina was then traced to Dudhnoi, added Jaynie.

Ichilina later admitted that she had been involved in the trafficking of two more girls. She also disclosed the involvement of Rajen in the crime.

Ichilina was brought to Mendipathar where the police asked her to call Rajen, who was then arrested.

North Garo Hills SP Dalton P Marak said that the police are interrogating the duo at Mendipathar and a case has been registered against them. Of the two girls they had trafficked earlier, one was sent to Mumbai and the other to New Delhi. The girl sent to New Delhi has died according to them, but we are verifying the facts. We are trying to find out if more people are involved in the racket, Marak added.
