Trafficked woman flees from captors in Delhi

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 2 - A 25-year-old woman who was lured to New Delhi from Guwahati with promises of a well-paid job soon found herself, and her two-year-old-son, sold to traffickers.

Although, Nafisa (name changed), a resident of Guwahati, somehow managed to escape from the traffickers, her son, reportedly sold near a dargah in Delhi, however, was untraceable. The child was later on rescued with the help of Shakti Vahini, an NGO, from New Delhi and is being brought to Guwahati.

Nafisa told Guwahati Police that although she was told that she would be taken to Dimapur for some job, Majibur instead took her to New Delhi, where she was kept in a hotel and then sold to some people there.

I was also separated from my child. After staying there for four days, I somehow came out from there. When I enquired about my child, I did not get any answer from them. I came to Guwahati in the second week of November, she said.

Police said it is investigating the matter and the accused is being questioned.

Karim Ali, husband of Nafisa, told this correspondent that he was kept in the dark about the developments till recently. I hail from Udalguri district. My wife, following a disagreement with my mother, started living with my in-laws in Guwahatis Noonmati area. I did not know when she went with that guy in search of a job. It was on November 25 that I came to know about it. My child has been sold in Delhi, I was told, Ali said.

Ali said he went to Paneri and Noonmati police stations to register his complaint but to no avail. Both the police stations refused to register my complaint, he rued.

Rishi Kant of Shakti Vahini told this reporter that the case indicates that Assamese girls are still being brought to Delhi and sold off. The case needs to be investigated properly, he said.
