PATACHARKUCHI, Oct 4 � The traditional boat race gave immense pleasure and added to the puja spirit of the thousands of people gathered at Pahumara river banks which were obviously decorated with �kahua�, the harbinger of autumn, today on the day of Vijaya Dasami.
People from far off places come to the river bank, situated about 5 km from Pathsala town of Barpeta district, to witness the annual event. At a time when some traditional events are on the verge of extinction, the people of No. 2 Medhikuchi village undertook the praise worthy effort by organizing the event since the last five decades.
This year too, on the Vijaya Dashami day today, it was no different as around 15,000 people gathered on the banks of Pahumara and above the concreate bridge to witness the rare annual event.
The race for supremacy started from the specific part of Pahumara river near Medhikuchi, popularly known as the �Member Ghat�, as the boats, some of which were at least 50 feet long and all in vibrant colours, sped on the mildly flowing waters of the Pahumara River. The kohuwa on both sides of the river played the perfect autumnal backdrop. The support of crowd put an extra dimension to the competition, while the rowers also provided a lyrical touch to the competition as they sang rhythmic songs while navigating their boats.
Tajmahal emerged the proud first prize winners, while Shahnaz had to settle for second prize.
The prizes were distributed in a function in the evening, when a cultural programme was also organized.
