Trade unions� agitation affects normal life in State

GUWAHATI, Nov 26 - The nationwide general strike called by 10 central trade unions affected normal life in Assam with protest rallies and picketing across the State.

Capital city Guwahati had a few relaxations of the strike due to the funeral of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi which was held at the Nabagraha crematorium here.

All Assam Motor Transport Association secretary general Pradip Das said that due to the funeral of the former Chief Minister, a few vehicles plied in the city to ferry passengers to the funeral.

However, public transport and banking services remained closed during most of the daytime across the State.

Rallies were taken out against the government�s alleged bid to privatise public enterprises, new labour and farm laws, price rise and government policies supporting the corporate at the cost of welfare of workers and employees.

The protests mostly remained peaceful throughout the State and no untoward incident was reported.

The Assam State Committee of Centre of Indian Trade Unions in a press statement said that the strike was successfully observed across the State.

�The business establishments in Digboi, Duliajan, Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Mushalpur, Goreswar, Rangiya, Udalguri, Mangaldoi, Tezpur, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Jorhat, Jagiroad and others remained closed during the day. Moreover, members of CITU carried out protest rallies shouting anti-BJP slogans at Rani, Mirza, Bijaynagar, Chaygaon, Boko, Nagarbera and Goroimari,� stated the press statement.

�The members of INTUC, CITU, AITUC, AICCTU, AIUTUC and the bank employees here in the city have carried out a protest rally in support of the nationwide strike from Panbazar to Fancy Bazar,� the statement added.

The coordination committee of Electricity Employees, Engineers and Pensioners joined the strike in solidarity with the country�s working class. The members of the committee observed a sit-in in front of the Bijulee Bhawan against privatization of Assam Power Distribution Company. The electricity employees and engineers in other parts of the State, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, Tezpur, and Silchar, also staged protest.

The members of the Assam State committee of All India Trade Union Congress also hit the street carrying placards and banners. The members also organised protest rallies at Mirza and also observed the protest at IOCL terminal, Betkuchi.

The North-Eastern Region Oil Workers Coordination Committee extended their support to the agitation.
