DIBRIUGARH, Aug 24 - Firebrand trade union leader Girish Chandra Borpatra Gohain, the general secretary of Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) who spearheaded the trade union for more than 20 years, passed away today at Assam Medical College and Hospital here.
The ACKS leader was under medical treatment at a private nursing home here when he reportedly contacted Covid-19 and was shifted to AMCH. After battling with his illness for about a week in AMCH, he succumbed today.
Gohain, originally hailed from Batbari, Sivasagar. He was serving in Tipuk tea estate near Doomdooma town in Tinsukia district for the past several decades. He was elected the general secretary of ACKS in 1999 and continued to hold the post till his death. He had retired from Tipuk tea estate in 2018 and was presently residing in Rupai Siding near Doomdooma. He leaves behind his three sons and his wife.
By virtue of his proficient leadership, ACKS president Hari Shuz Jamal said that Gohain was also made the general secretary of the Assam (Plantation) unit of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and also served as the spokesperson of the Wage Board of the Assam Tea Industry. �His death is a huge loss to the entire working class of the State, as the employees of plantations in particular had benefited enormously from his leadership. He was truly a great leader who served with dedication and commitment,� Jamal told The Assam Tribune as he expressed grief over Gohain�s death.
Mourning over the death of the great trade union leader, Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA), Zone-1 and Rupesh Goalla, general secretary, Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) also expressed their condolences to the bereaved family members of the leaders and to the entire ACKS members.
