By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, July 29 - The Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to improve infrastructure in eastern Assam.

Signed by its president Bhudev Phukan, the memorandum stated that the eastern Assam and the city has already grown into a major centre of industry, trade and commerce, educational institutions, medical facilities, rail, road and air communications and is also popularly known as the Tea City of India because of the high volume of tea production and export from here.

The EACCI memorandum stated that Dibrugarh is going to be a major hub of all round activities in eastern Assam very soon. Hence, in order to enable the town to cope with the changing economic activities by removing the existing constraints, it suggested a few vital measures including re-orienting administrative set up and a few infrastructure development projects that need to be taken up by the Government of Assam in the right earnest.

The trade body also suggested setting up of a mini secretariat in Dibrugarh and a permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court.

In order to cope with changing economic and industrial environment and to ensure sustainable economic development of the area and the state, the EACCI put forward the proposal for setting up of a world-class Inter State Bus Terminus to be built along-side the Dibrugarh by-pass at a suitable place and that the ASTC bus stand building and premises at Chowkidinghee here be utilised for official and also for the purpose of repairing of buses. In the same context, establishment of a zonal or regional office of the ASTC in Dibrugarh was also demanded.

In order to ease traffic congestions at the two vital entry and exit points to the city, that is, Lahowal and Convoy Road rail crossings, the memorandum proposed construction of T type flyovers at both these locations. This will benefit the people of the Legislative Assembly constituencies of 117 Lahowal, 118 Duliajan, 119 Tingkhong and 120 Naharkatia as they have to face lot of problems at Lahowal and Convoy Road rail crossings, the memorandum added. It may be mentioned here that the flyover being constructed over the NH 37 along the Dibrugarh bypass will not ease traffic congestions at Lahowal and Convoy Road crossings.

The memorandum demanded setting up of ATDC office in Dibrugarh and information centres at Dibrugarh Airport, Dibrugarh railway station and Dibrugarh Town railway station.
