Trade bodies level charges against each other

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 Even as the common man continues to bear the brunt of price rise, trade bodies and businessmen of the State have entered into a mud-slinging business.

While the Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) today lashed out at Kamrup Chamber of Commerce (KCC) for overlooking the growth of syndicates and black-marketeers of essential commodities and threatening to hike the price of essential goods, the Assam Onion and Potato Merchants Association (OPMA) threatened to sue the ACC for making what it termed as uncalled for and baseless allegations.

Rupam Goswami, the convenor of ACC, in a press meet earlier today, had alleged that a section of businessman based in Guwahati is running the syndicate of perishable items like onion, potato, sugar, mustard oil, vegetables, fish and even fruits, which is taking its toll on the end consumers in the form of price rise.

In reply, Vinod Jain, general secretary, OPMA said: The ACC must get their facts right before making any comment. Let them first check the price of onion and potatoes at source and then make comment. Their allegations have no base and I am contemplating to file a defamation case against them.

The ACC also flayed KCC president Mahavir Jain for allegedly trying to influence the price of commodities in the market.

Though we endorse the problems faced by the trade society due to railways indifferent attitude, we cannot allow the KCC to influence the price for their vested interest, Rupam Goswami stated.

He further sought Government intervention to regulate the prices.

Bijay Gupta, joint convenor, ACC was also present on the occasion.
