GUWAHATI, Dec 1 The 12-hour trade bandh called in protest of the Union Government decision to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector, evoked near-total response in the capital city.

All the major trading points including Fancy Bazaar and Ganeshguri along with the entire stretch of GS Road observed a total shutdown since the morning.

Shopping malls and retail outlets in the capital city, barring a few shops in some pockets of Guwahati, too remain closed.

However, the city witnessed movement of vehicular traffic in usual intensity throughout the day.

Educational institutes and offices, both private and Government, also functioned in their usual mode.

The nation-wide trade bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been supported by various political parties and trade bodies. The Kamrup Chamber of Commerce and the Assam Chamber of Commerce too have extended their support.
