Track doubling of Digaru-Hojai section to be over by May 2021

By PRANJAL BHUYAN

GUWAHATI, Nov 28 - Work on track doubling of the Digaru-Hojai section of the Indian Railways is progressing as per schedule and the project is targeted for completion by May next year.

Senior Public Relations Officer (SPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction) SK Ojah told The Assam Tribune that the project in the 102-km section is being carried out on a priority basis.

The first phase of the project, in the Digaru-Jagiroad portion, was completed last month and inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has been carried out successfully in that stretch. In the second phase, we have set a target to complete the doubling work in the Kampur-Hojai stretch by January 2021. This will be followed by the Dharamtul-Kampur portion, which we hope to finish by February next year, Ojah said.

He added that the entire doubling work in the Digaru-Hojai section is expected to be finished by May 2021, with completion of the last phase of the project in the Jagiroad-Dharamtul stretch.

There will be a total of 84 bridges in the Digaru-Hojai section. Of these, 11 will be major bridges and 73 will be minor bridges. The section will have 20 road crossings and five road overbridges. There are 14 stations in the section and 28 passenger platforms.

Trains will operate at a maximum speed of 110 km per hour in the section. While doing doubling works, the permanent speed restriction on five locations of the existing track has also been removed.

Ojah said that completion of the work on the second track in the Digaru-Jagiroad stretch has given a momentum to the entire doubling project which is being carried out by the NFR (Construction Organisation).

Completion of work in the 25.62-km broad gauge double line between Digaru and Jagiroad in the Lumding Division is a major achievement. It has given an impetus for the entire project of doubling the track in the Digaru-Hojai section, he said.

Mohammad Latief Khan, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Kolkata, had last month inspected the newly constructed section from Digaru to Jagiroad, along with senior officials from NFR (Construction). Khan had first conducted a motor trolley inspection of the line, before undertaking a speed train trial run up to the speed of 120 km per hour.

Ojah said that focus on safety has been given while undertaking work on the doubling project.

For example, centralised electrical operations of points and signals with double line block working having Block Proving Axle Counter (BPAC) have been proposed for signalling. In addition, modern telecommunication has been installed and for this OFC and 6-Quad cable have been provided for control, level crossing gates, and better administrative trunk and emergency communication facilities have been proposed, Ojah said.
