AIZAWL, Oct 20 - With an aim to make Mizoram tourist-friendly, Mizoram Police has designated a special force called Tourist Police. Flagging off the Tourist Police on Friday, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana lauded the initiative of Mizoram Police to make the state a safe place for foreign tourists.

I appreciate the idea of Tourist Police as Mizoram is emerging as a tourist hotspot, Lalchamliana said, and hoped that the Tourist Police would discharge their duties effectively and promote etiquette and politeness in dealing with tourists. He said the launch of the Tourist Police would help boost tourism in Mizoram.

Mizoram Director General of Police SBK Singh gave a brief report on the procedures involved in the establishment of the Tourist Police. Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and senior officials of police and other departments were present on the occasion.

As of now, the Tourist Police comprises seven police personnel trained in soft and communication skills, and with knowledge of tourist places. They will initially be deployed in five major tourist hubs. Tourists may approach them to seek information on tourist locations, transport systems, facilities available, legal inputs, shopping centres, hospitals, etc.

In the event of emergencies at a tourist place, tourists may call the Tourist Police for immediate intervention, a police release stated.
