Tough task ahead of Assam

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 10 Assam is in a difficult situation as they need 280 more runs with seven wickets in hand to cross Gujarats first innings total.

In reply to Gujarats first innings total of 387, Assam were struggling with 108 for three at stumps on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Nehru Stadium here today.

Gujarat, resuming at the over night total of 294 for five, were all out for 387 after the lunch break. Sunny Patel, who was unbeaten on 78 yesterday, completed his century and out for 108. He faced 181 balls and stayed at the crease for 287 minutes. Sunny cracked 17 boundaries and a six. Gujarat tail enders Salil Yadav (20) and Jayesh Makla (21 n.o) had some useful contributions to their total.

For Assam Abu Nechim Ahmed and Arlen Konwar shared two wickets while Sridharan Sriram took one.

The hosts started their innings with a positive note adding 49 runs for the opening wicket partnership. But after fall Dheeraj Jadhav for 20, Assam received another blow when their dependable batsman S Sriram was run out for naught. Due to some misunderstanding with Sib Sankar Roy, Sriram was run out. Later Sib Sankar was also caught by wicket keeper Rajdeep Darbar off Ishawar Choudhury for 39. Both Dheeraj and Sib Sankar were playing comfortably but made silly mistakes and offered easy catches to wicket keeper.

At stumps captain Amol Mazumdar and Tarjinder Singh were batting with 35 and three respectively. Now a lot will depend on Amol, Tarjinder, Gokul Sharam, Dhiraj Goswami and Rajdeep Das who have to put their heads down and tackle Gujrat attacks confidently. The wicket seems to be plying easy and if the batsmen make unforced errors they may achieve the target.

Today Amol showed his courage as despite being hit by a pacer Iswar Choudhurys delivery on his face, he continued batting with determination.
