Total bandh hits life in Manipur hills

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, July 27 - Normal life in the five hill districts of Manipur was hit today by a 24-hour total bandh called by Naga Peoples Front (NPF) Manipur unit to protest against the State Governments failure to facilitate formation of Autonomous District Councils in the six ADCs of Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul, before July 25.

Meanwhile, in Imphal, auto-rickshaws suspended their services and staged sit-in protests at parking sites todayto express solidarity with the ongoing agitation demanding introduction of Inner Line Permit System in the State to regulate influx of outsiders.

The headquarters of the hill districts wore a deserted look owing to the total shut down of the market areas and suspension of inter-district vehicular movement. The schools and offices were also closed. However, there is no report of any untoward incident till the report goes to press.

The ADC elections in the State was completed a month back and swearing in and oath-taking ceremony of the elected members have been also conducted on July 13 and 24 respectively. But the government has not fixed a date for constituting the six ADCs.

NPF Manipur unit presidentAwangbou Newmai informed the media that the party will also launch other forms of agitation if the government failed to fulfill the demands.
