Total autonomy for institutions advocated

NAGAON, Sept 16 � The main aim of education is generation and dissemination of knowledge, for which institutions of higher learning should enjoy total autonomy.

These should not be under any university, observed prominent educationist, physicist and science activist Dr Kulendu Pathak while delivering the third Sanchayita Ojha Memorial Lecture at Nowgong College recently. The lecture programme was arranged by the English Department of the college and the topic of the lecture was, �Engagement of higher education with society.�

Dr Pathak observed that our education must be useful to the society and for that students must be involved. He recalled that the education system advocated by Mahatma Gandhi was the true education system of our country. But unfortunately our leaders did not pay due attention to the issue.

Dr Pathak advocated for total autonomy for the higher education institutions. The lecture was arranged in memory of Sanchayita Ojha, who was a student of the English Department of the college and daughter of retired principal and veteran sports organiser Sahajananda Ojha and Bandana Ojha respectively.

Earlier, Prof Lira Neog introduced Dr Pathak and Head of the English Department KP Chowdhury spoke a few words about Sanchayita.

The programme started with a Borgeet presented by Aatreyee Saikia, a student of the college. Floral tributes were paid at the portrait of Sanchayita Ojha. Principal Dr K Bhuyan was in the chair.

The best student award of English Department of Undivided Nagaon District was presented to Resbin Sultana, a student of Nowgong College.

The governing body president, Alook Goswami and other dignitaries were present in the function.

Teachers� Day: Teachers� Day was observed at Nagaon also. Attending an official function at the district library auditorium here, Tourism and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain praised the teaching community for the role played by them in guiding future generation of our country. The teachers also enjoy a high social status in our country since the early days, he added.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Dr Om Prakash chaired the function where retired Registrar of Tezpur Central University Mahendra Ahom also spoke a few words as appointed speaker.

Nagaon Zila Sahitya Sabha also felicitated three retired teachers of the district on the occasion of Teachers� Day.

Nowgong Lions Club too felicitated two teachers of the district to mark the occasion.

Press club anniversary: The fifth anniversary of Nowgong Press Club was held on September 5.

The open session held on the occasion was chaired by Kanak Hazarika, president of Nagaon Press Club.

Attending the open session as chief guest, Minister Rockybul Hussain assured the media persons that the Government is responsible for implementing the recommendations of the Wage Board for journalists. The Minister also highlighted the different steps taken by the State Government for the welfare of the media persons, including economic security.

Former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Mahim Bora, Acting Deputy Commissioner Dr Om Prakash, SP, Nitul Gogoi also addressed the function.

Some prominent media persons, namely Dr Saradananda Goswami, Narendra Nath Hazarika, Jitendra Nath Nayak, Purna Kanta Nath, Sabharam Majumdar and Ajit Hazarika were felicitated on the occasion.
