By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, May 23 - BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi, who is also Minister of State for Power (Independent Charge) in Sarbananda Sonowal-led Government, won from the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat by defeating Indian National Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain.

Official declaration of result of the Jorhat parliamentary constituency comprising 10 Assembly seats spreading over Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts is yet to made as counting of VVPAT slips and postal ballots were underway, the Returning Officer of Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Roshni A Korati, who is Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, told The Assam Tribune this evening.

It may be mentioned here that as per EC rules this time VVPAT slips of five polling stations randomly of each Assembly constituency under a Lok Sabha seat have to be counted after completion of counting of EVMs, and then only result could be declared officially.

As per official sources at the counting centre (Jorhat Govt Boys MP and HS School) Gogoi won by a margin of over 82,336 votes. This margin may increase as counting of postal ballots and VVPAT slips were yet to be completed.

The result assumes political significance as the Jorhat parliamentary seat, once a Congress citadel, has been won by the saffron party for the second consecutive term after the party wrested the seat in 2014 with Kamakhya Prasad Tasa trouncing veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Late BK Handique.

This time the saffron party fielded Gogoi replacing Tasa. Borgohain, a former Congress MLA (2011-16), from Thawra is a former national Youth Congress leader. Topon Gogoi is currently a legislator of Sonari seat, a segment of the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency.

Reacting to his victory, a jubilant Gogoi told media-persons here that Prime Minister Narendra Modis policy of saab ka saath saab ka vikash ushering an era of development and prosperity led to the saffron party sweeping across the country.

Replying to a query, Gogoi said that CAB failed to make any impact on the people of the State. He also said that the results showed that people reposed faith on Sarbananda Sonowal-Government which too had initiated a journey of progress and prosperity in Assam.

Bursting of fire-crackers with shouting of slogans praising Modi, Sonowal and BJP and throwing colours among party supporters with music played on sound systems were seen in the streets here after results trends indicated a landslide BJP win.
