Topon Gogoi banking on development poll plank

By STAFF Correspondent

JORHAT, March 26 - The BJP candidate for the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Topon Kumar Gogoi, who is now the Minister of State for Power (Independent charge) in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP Government, feels that the journey of development and progress started by the BJP governments at the Centre and in the State, will enable the saffron party retain the Jorhat parliamentary seat.

In an informal interaction with media-persons here yesterday after filing his nomination papers, Gogoi said that the "journey of development and progress" initiated by the Narendra Modi-led and Sarbananda Sonowal-led governments at the Centre and in the State respectively, had been able to build a bond of trust between the Government and the people.

He said he believed that people will definitely vote for the BJP to continue the era of progress and prosperity ushered in by the BJP governments at the Centre and State.

Gogoi, the incumbent MLA from Sonari an Assembly seat within Jorhat Parliamentary constituency said that he was very much overwhelmed by the tremendous response he received from his party workers and well-wishers on the day of filing his papers.

Apart from party workers, a large number of people from all sections of the society came out to the streets to wish me well all along my journey to Jorhat, Gogoi stated.

He said he was confident of victory and also of his party across the country with Modi set to become Prime Minister again.

Gogoi was accompanied by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cabinet colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the NEDA Convenor, and the incumbent Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of the saffron party to the Jorhat Deputy Commissioners chamber to submit his papers. He submitted his papers to Jorhat DC Roshni A Korati, who is the Returning Officer for 12 Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.

Earlier, Gogoi, also a former AASU General Secretary, came in a colourful procession from his constituency Sonari in Charaideo district, with a large number of party workers and supporters holding posters, banners and party flags, accompanying him and shouting slogans. A sizeable number of women and youths were part of the procession.

Local BJP workers welcomed Gogoi from the outskirts here along with a huge rally with campaign songs being played in loudspeakers. The Jorhat Lok Sabha seat comprises 10 Assembly constituencies spread over Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.

It may be mentioned here that the BJP during the 2014 polls wrested the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat (believed to be a Congress citadel) from the Congress party by defeating veteran leader and former Union Minister late Bijoy Krishna Handique, who had been winning the seat for six consecutive times since 1991.
