Top archers for nat�l meet in city

GUWAHATI, March 27 � Top archers of the country like Jayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai, Mangal Singh, Dola Banerjee and all the rising stars of the State will vie for different titles in the 30th Senior National Archery Championship, scheduled to be held at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Sarusajai here from April 24 to 26.

Competitions will be held in recurve and compound category and the meet will be organised by the Assam Archery Association (AAA) under the aegis of the Archery Association of India (AAI).

Elaborating about the championship to the media, the State archery body president Jayanta Boro said, apart from the State government, organisations like North East Council, Indian Oil, Assam Oil and some other business houses will provide financial assistance for the championship.

He also mentioned that archers for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games will be picked up from this meet and therefore all the 39 affiliated units of the AAI will send their teams.

Organising secretary Pradip Hazarika revealed that the participants will be accommodated at the Sarusajai sports hostel. He also mentioned that a budget of Rs 30 lakh has been prepared to organise the event in a befitting manner. Hazarika said the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will provide technical support in the meet. SAI city centre director incharge Subhash Basumatary, who is also chief adviser of the organising committee, said about 300 competitors in recurve and 150 in compound are likely to take part in the meet. They are planning to set 45 to 50 targets inside the main stadium at Sarusajai and some of the targets even will be on the track. Basumatary clarified that considering some advantages they have preferred to hold the meet at Sarusajai in place of Tepesia Archery Centre which is in a deplorable condition. He also expected a high quality competition during the three-day meet.
