TMPK protest over flood-erosion problems

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 10 - The Mising students body Takam Mising Porin Kbang (TMPK) on Wednesday carried out a protest against the alleged irregularities and complicity by the concerned departments to provide relief materials to the flood and erosion affected people of Lakhimpur district and for the flood-erosion management.

Thousands of TMPK activists and supporters staged a sit-in protest in front of the Deputy Commissioners Office in North Lakhimpur demanding immediate distribution of relief among the unreached flood victims of the district. They said that many areas of Lakhimpur have been badly affected by the flash floods lately and after that erosion by rivers have been causing lot of problems. The duel threat of flood and erosion has left thousands of lives to a precarious position.

Besides, the TMPK said, the authorities failed to provide relief, medicine and cattle feed to the affected people during the flood. The TMPK activists also shouted slogans against the Water Resources Department of Lakhimpur for their alleged corruption in carrying out flood management in the district. They blamed the department for its faulty work on the ongoing embankment construction work of Ranganadi near the Borbeel area where the recent spate on the river damaged it considerably.

The TMPK also accused the Water Resource Department for constructing the geo-tube embankment of Ranganadi to save the Dejoo Tea Estate from its erosion which is now sending the free flow of that course of the river towards Borbeel causing massive erosion to the embankment. It may be recalled that the Mising community of Lakhimpur district live mostly on riverine areas where flood and erosion creates havoc every year.
