GUWAHATI, July 22 - Elections to the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) will be held on August 19, the Assam State Election Commission declared today.
However, polling will be held only in 30 of the 36 constituencies of the TAC. In the six constituencies situated in the Kamrup Metro district, there will be no elections for the time being.
State Election Commissioner HN Bora told reporters here today that time for filing of nomination papers will close at 3 pm on July 29. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on July 30.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is August 1. Polling will take place between 8 am and 4 pm on August 19. Repoll, if necessary, will take place on August 21. Counting of votes and declaration of results has been scheduled for August 22.
Of the 30 constituencies where polls will be held, 19 seats are in Morigaon district and 11 are in Nagaon district.
The State Election Commission had adjourned the process of preparation of electoral rolls in six constituencies of TAC situated in Kamrup Metro district, namely No. 26 Dimoria, No. 32 Digaru, No. 33 Khetri, No. 34 Sonapur, No. 35 Ampri and No. 36 Phong-Ari, keeping in view the agitation programme resorted to by a section of people against holding of election in these constituencies.
The final electoral rolls for the 30 constituencies under Morigaon and Nagaon districts were published on July 7.
Bora said the model code of conduct has come into immediate effect.
Of the 30 constituencies going to the poll, 24 are reserved for Schedule Tribe (ST) candidates. Within the 24 reserved ST seats, five are also reserved for women candidates.
The total number of voters for the TAC elections in Nagaon district are 81,390 (including 42,084 male voters and 39,306 female voters) and 1,31,727 voters in Morigaon district (65,768 male voters and 65,959 female voters).
There will be 189 polling stations in Morigaon and 98 in Nagaon.
Regarding plans for holding elections to the Deuri Autonomous Council and the Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council, Bora said the electoral rolls for both have been published. However, the government is still to make a final call on the issue of seats reserved for women candidates.
