Title contenders shocked

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 29 Table leaders ASEB Sports Club and Dynamo Club were upset by Gauhati Town Club and NF Railway Sports Association respectively in todays matches of the Guwahati Sports Associations Super League Football Tournament for the RG Baruah Trophy. In two well contested matches at the Nehru Stadium here today, Town edged out ASEB 1-0 while NF Railway trounced Dynamo by a margin of 2-0 goals.

Town-ASEB: Nothing went right for defending champions ASEB Sports Club players today as they miserably failed in all departments. Adding to the misery, their skipper Maneswar Musahary missed a spot kick in the 89th minute conversion which could have fetched them at least one point.

On the other hand, Town players got their act together from the word go. All the players were seen in good form and got down to business with strong determination. Capitalising on the gaps left by the ASEB midfielders, Town frontliner Shyam Murah initiated a move down the left flank and set the ball for Khuanjeng Kamei who beat ASEB custodian Daoga Brahma with a gentle shot in the 42nd minute (1-0).

The Town defenders today did a laudable job by containing the opponent attackers before they could reach their striking zone. In form ASEB strikers Dipankar Sarkar and Chayaram Basumatary were virtually bottled up by the Town defenders and were never allowed to cruise through to their goal area.

NFR-Dynamo: A spirited NF Railway Sports Association earned a well deserved 2-0 victory against title contender Dynamo Club in the second ground.

Jilendra Brahma netted both the goals for the winning team in the 22nd and 70th minutes. The NF Railway team, comprising some veteran players, played a methodical game today and kept the opponent at the receiving end throughout the course.

Their midfielders Apurva Bordoloi, Duleswar Rabha and Golapchand Basfor played the pivotal role and fed their strikers using both the flanks. Jilendra beautifully anticipated the balls at the right flank and beat the opponent defenders with his speed before beating the goalkeeper. Dynamo strikers Abraham Goodluck and Onyebi Nandos Ogbonna tried their hearts out but due to lack of accuracy in shooting at goal Dynamo had to suffer the defeat.

With todays results, the Super League has became wide open for the top four teams-ASEB (16 pts) Dynamo (15 pts), GTC (13 pts), NFR (11 pts).

Todays matches: (Relegation group) AP Blues vs Green Valley; FCI vs Sunrise.
