Timber seized

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 16 - The Lakhimpur district Forest Department has recovered a huge number of timber logs worth several lakhs of rupees from illegal traders from various parts of the district.

On Friday, the Forest Department seized timber logs from the river port of Subansiri. The timber was of Bombast trees, an exotic local breed, the felling of which has been banned in the State. Earlier, the Lakhimpur Forest Department also seized sawed timber from two trucks from the same area.

It may be mentioned here that the riverine areas of Subansiri in Lakhimpur district have witnessed large-scale felling of exotic Bombast trees by illegal traders. Places like Pub-Telahi, Lohit-Khabolu, Ghunasuti, Mornoi-Bebejiya, Jugalpur, Khoga, Echarikata and Ghancharai have become the hub of such illegal timber trade from where logs of Bombast trees are sent to various saw mills in tractors.
