Tihu firing incident condemned

GUWAHATI, July 17 - The incident of firing on a group of protestors at Tihu today has been condemned by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), while condemning the incident, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has described the incident as the result of a personal acrimony of two CRPF jawans. The protestors were demanding upgrading Tihu as a sub-division.

The incident resulted in the death of a young boy Himangshu Tamuly and injury to some others.

AGP president Atul Bora has condemned the incident as an act of barbarism, while its senior leaders Rekharani Das Boro and Pabindra Deka also vehemently condemned the incident.

The AASU has described the incident as an unprovoked one and condemned it. It has demanded stringent punishment to the guilty CRPF personnel. Tomorrow, AASU members will lit lamps at the district and sub-divisional headquarters as marks of respect to Himangshu Tamuly and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident. However, they will cover their faces with black clothes, said an AASU press release here this evening.

The Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti has also condemned the incident. The APCC demanded an inquiry into the incident and stringent punishment of the guilty. It has also called for steps to extend financial assistance to the family of Himangshu Tamuly. It further said that the Chief Minister has already directed the Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari to extend financial assistance to the bereaved family.
