GUWAHATI, Oct 31 - The 5th All India Tibet Support Groups Conference, organized by the Core Group for Tibetan Cause an apex coordinating body of Tibet support groups all over India, would be held here on November 2 and 3.
Arguing that the Tibetan cause is closely associated with the security of India, RK Khirmey, chairman of the organising committee of the event today, said that the issues associated with this cause have wider implications on the Northeastern region.
More than 200 Tibet support groups affiliated to different ideologies are fighting for the Tibetan cause, but there is need for creating more awareness in the northeastern part of India, he said, addressing the media here.
The 80th birthday of the spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, would also be celebrated on the occasion. Dr Lobsang Sangay, political head of the Central Tibetan Administration, would attend the event as a special guest.
More than 180 representatives of various Tibetan support groups from across India will take part in the event to discuss and strategise on strengthening the Tibetan movement for peaceful and political solution of the Tibetan issue.
The purpose of this conference is to highlight the ever-growing repressive implementation of Chinese policies and the worsening human rights situation inside Tibet. So far, 143 cases of self- immolation have come to light in Tibet. The Chinese policies are allegedly changing the socio-cultural and demographic pattern of Tibet gradually, posing a threat to the unique culture and identity of the Tibetans.
Jigmey Tsultrim, coordinator from India Tibet Coordination Office, said that Chinese exploitation of Tibetan natural resources and environmental destruction has posed a serious threat to the ecology of world.
In the 1960s, there were only a dozen of dams; but now more than 22,000 hydropower projects and dams have been constructed, he added.
