Thuruk yet to see the light of development

By Correspondent

HAFLONG, March 13 Thuruk, the coolest place in North Cachar Hills, 130 km from here is yet to see the light of development even after 63 years of the countrys independence.

Thuruk village established in the year 1940 has a population of 300 living in 40 houses. Most of the houses are traditional pile houses. The village is inhabited by the people belonging to the Biate tribe. It is considered to be the coolest place of the district as one can experience snow fall during the month of December and January.

The village does have an LP and ME school building but there is no furniture or even is no signboard. The teachers seldom come to the school as communication to the village is very difficult though the distance from Khobak is only 22 km. From New Sangbar to Khobak, there is a pucca road. It is learnt that about 30 or 35 years back the NEC had started the construction of a road from New Sangbar-Khobak-Thuruk Harangajao which was supposed to connect the Haflong- Silchar road at Harangajao thereby reducing the distance between Silchar and Guwahati by at least 80 KM.

The villagers are simple; one cannot forget their hospitality who visits the place once. The village is famous for agricultural products but the lack of communication stands on the way to its development. Lalthuma Lalsim, gaonbura of Thuruk while talking to this correspondent disclosed that no officials or public leader visited the place due to lack of road communication. Absence of electricity in the village is also a prime hindrance especially for the schoolchildren. We can only arrange kerosene lamp for their studies, he added.

The village urgently needs road and electricity. The villagers never complain but request the concerned authority to provide at least the road and electricity.

Sangi Ngamlai, ASHA worker disclosed that the children and mothers do not get proper immunisation. The patients are carried to Harangajao on foot for any medical assistance. The medical officials visit the place once or twice in a year.
