GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - At an induction programme held at the ruling partys state head-office at Hengrabari here today, actress Asha Bordoloi, former sportsperson and former AASU sports secretary Tapan Das and educationist Prabha Chowdhury Dastidar joined the the saffron party.
They joined the ruling party in presence of State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
Singer and musician Vidya Sagar, who has been a member of the BJP since 2009 but had taken part in the anti-CAA agitation last year without formally resigning from the party, was granted active membership of the ruling party on the occasion.
Speaking to reporters, Sagar said, I had joined the BJP in 2009 when the party was not very strong in Assam. Since then, I have been with the BJP. My moral support was always with the party. I was serving as an ordinary cadre of the party.
Asked about his participation in the anti-CAA agitation, he alleged that a wrong narrative was spread by some forces at that time which made many people emotional.
CAA will not harm the Assamese people. It (CAA) was misinterpreted, Sagar said.
The singer added that he is not interested in seeking party ticket to contest the 2021 Assembly elections.
BJP cadres have always served the organisation and the society selflessly. During the lockdown, I was stuck at my native place at Barhampur. There I saw how the BJP cadres distributed provisions among the lockdown-affected people and selflessly helped them. That attracted me to the party, Bordoloi said.
Bordoloi clarified that she had never taken part in the anti-CAA agitation.
Let me make it clear. I was not involved in the agitation. In my mind, I always had the belief that the BJP would never work against the interests of the people of Assam and that was why I never got involved in the anti-CAA agitation, she said.
Bordoloi added that she is also not interested in contesting the 2021 polls.
I am involved in cultural arena. My aim is to serve the people as well as the party through the cultural field, she said.
